US Mint Sales: Bullion Robust, Collector Coins Retreat
October 29, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
US Mint collector coins moved like molasses when compared to sales figures of two weeks ago. But bullion coins — especially gold — still had a little swagger in their step. October will be a robust month for American Eagles and American Buffalos.
These and other highlights follow:
-
UHR Double Eagles took a significant hit, rising sadly by only 562. Since they went on sale Jan. 22, there has been one single instance when weekly sales were lower. The reason? Gold has been on a five day losing streak, which started last Thursday. It makes sense for collectors to be cautious in buying with expectations of a $50 price decline. We missed that reduction by just 28.8 cents.
-
In the Lincoln category, the Chronicles sets were taken off standby status last week with the max 50,000 officially allocated. Lincoln Cent Proof Sets climbed by 4,900, which was less than half of the prior 10,921 increase.
-
2009 US Mint and US Mint Proof Sets were the biggest unit gainers, rising 21,826 and 22,613 respectively. The proof sets were actually up a tad bit. Not so for the mint sets which previously climbed by 74,474. The 500,000 milestone is still nearly 11K away.

Coin News: Lincoln Cent Values, Buffalo Nickel, Jay Johnson
October 21, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
Four numismatic news or coin blog articles are referenced on CoinNews every Tuesday and Thursday. These articles are not authored by us, but we recommend coin collectors read them for their unusual or interesting content. Here are today’s coin articles:
Gateway closing a little [Lincoln Cent Values]
Steve Roach | Coin Values
Lincoln cents are one of the gateway coins of numismatics and most collectors have at one time or another filled a blue Whitman album with circulated Lincoln cents. The series is one of the first that people collect, and it’s still an exciting moment for most people to find a Wheat reverse cent, produced from 1909 to 1958, in circulation today …

2009 Lincoln Chronicles Set Excitement
October 13, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
Excitement is certainly gathering in anticipation of the US Mint’s release of the 2009 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set this Thursday, Oct. 15, at noon (Eastern Time).
The coin-related online blogs and news sites have been warning readers of the high likelihood of a one day sell-out of the sets, and that is even with the household order limit in place by the Mint of one per household.
While you could hardly classify the pre-launch interest as a frenzy, or even call it the same level we experienced for the Lincoln Cents, perhaps it should be. The Mint had 325,000 of the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Proof Dollars (the same one that will be included in the Lincoln Chronicles set) available earlier this year. They sold out in 43 days.

Heritage Auction Galleries
Oct. 12, 2009
That was not the opinion of a Mint consultant, who deemed as counterfeit a 1969-S doubled die cent he examined. There are five documented instances of 1969-S doubled die cents being confiscated by the Secret Service (then part of the Department of the Treasury) and later destroyed. The official position of the Treasury Department was that there were no legitimate 1969-dated doubled die cents from any Mint, a position that was carried through the trial of the counterfeiters.
After the trial, however, the Treasury paid more attention to the 1969-S doubled die cents and the questions they raised: if the 1969-S doubled die cents matched Mint specifications for weight, diameter, composition, and so on, what was the basis for declaring them counterfeit? By the mid-1970s, the Treasury had reversed course, with official acknowledgement of the 1969-S coins’ authenticity. This recognition, however, did not come before five of the coins were destroyed—and with estimates of between 17 and 32 survivors extant, five coins would make up a sizable chunk of the population!
With so few examples around today, it’s highly unusual for one to appear in any given auction, but the October Dallas U.S. Coin auction has two! Lot 176 is an AU55 example, lightly worn but otherwise well-preserved. Immediately after that piece is hammered down, Lot 177 comes up, and that coin is even finer, graded MS63 Red!
It’s a remarkable opportunity for the Lincoln cent collector, even rarer than the 1969-S doubled die cents themselves. Who says there are no second chances in numismatics?

US Mint Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set Debut
September 29, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
The United States Mint introduced the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set to its online store on Monday, in preparation for its launch on Oct. 15, 2009, at noon ET.
The much anticipated set includes proof versions of the four 2009 Lincoln Cents and a proof Lincoln Silver Dollar — the same commemorative dollar that sold out earlier this year under the pressure of enormous collector demand.
The Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set is priced at $55.95, with just 50,000 available to buy. The price is a current steal considering single silver dollars are going for more on the secondary market. (See proof Lincolns Silver Dollars on eBay.)
The 50,000 limit is mandated given the act authorizing the silver dollars permitted a total of 500,000 across both proof and uncirculated options. Collectors already scooped up 325,000 of the proof and 125,000 of the uncirculated Lincoln dollars earlier in the year, forcing the US Mint to halt sales and list the individual coins as "sold out" just six weeks after their launch.
With such anticipation for this offering, the Mint has set an order limit of 1 per household. Even with that in place, many expect the set could sellout on the first day of issuance, leaving many collectors empty-handed.

Weekly Market Recap 08/21/09
August 22, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
This week has seen more sideways trading as the markets continue to seek a clear and definitive direction. While some are claiming the worst is over, others like Bloomberg.com report that more than 300 banks could still fail across the nation, further affecting small businesses and consumers, the real drivers of the economy. This mixed review has left many precious metals investors highly concerned about the validity of the positive reports and leery of the potential backlash of over confidence in the stock markets.

Numismatics
Though it is a fixture on all American coins and currency now, IN GOD WE TRUST did not appear on American coinage until 1864 when it graced the Two-Cent Piece. This was due in large part to the strong religious beliefs of the time during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Mint Salmon P. Chase took it upon himself to affix some type of motto with the word “GOD” onto all coins. He was successful in doing so in 1865 when Congress, and the Mint Director allowed the motto to be placed on all silver and gold coins. Between the years of 1864 and 1909 it appeared on some coins while it did not appear on others. A few coins that it did appear on were the Shield Nickel , the $20, $10 and $5 Liberty Gold Coins, the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Barber Half Dollar, and the Barber Quarter Dollar. It appeared on the new Lincoln Cent in 1909 and has remained there ever since. In 1916 it became a permanent fixture on the dime and the quarter. The Jefferson Nickel, first minted in 1938, also bore that inscription. In 1956 IN GOD WE TRUST was declared the national motto of the United States. The motto first appeared on paper currency in 1957 with the one dollar silver certificate. Though it has met with some controversy, most Americans approve of the motto on United States money.
APMEX has now obtained the 2009 Denver Mint Professional Years Lincoln Cent. They are available as a single coin, as a roll, or as a 50 roll box ($25 Face Value). Next week, on August 26th, the Mint will release the 4 newly-designed 2009 Lincoln Cents in their original copper composition, just as they were released in 1909. These coins will be packaged as a four coin proof set. Their original composition was 95% copper, 3% zinc, and 2% tin alloy. Thomas Jurkowsky, Director of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Public Affairs, has stated that the sets are unlimited. The Mint has not yet disclosed a price.
15.2 Million Lincoln Professional Life Cents Sold in Four Days
August 19, 2009 by goldguru · Leave a Comment
2009 Lincoln Professional Life Cents have jumped out of the gate with exceptional inaugural sales — higher than the first Log Cabin design, but lower than the second released Rail Splitter pennies.
The Mint launched the new pennies on Thursday, Aug. 13, to another excited, anticipating public crowd (see Illinois Lincoln Cent launch photos). On the same day, two-roll sets — one roll of 50 coins for the United States Mint at Philadelphia and one roll of 50 coins for the United States Mint at Denver — went on sale for $8.95.
As of Sunday, the Mint said 152,146 of the Professional Life two-roll sets have sold. With 50 pennies per roll, that’s more than 15.2 million pennies purchased by collectors.
