Miranda granted KZN mining coal right

JSE-listed Miranda Minerals subsidiary, Spirit Trading, has been granted a mining right for the Burnside coal project, near Dundee, in KwaZulu-Natal, the junior reported on Thursday.

The mining right indicated the first step in the company’s strategic shift from mineral resource holding company to coal explorer and miner, said CEO Andrew Johnson.

Zambia’s 2011 copper output down, cobalt up

Zambia’s 2011 copper output fell to 739 759 t from 767 008 t in the prior year, the Central Statistics Office said on Thursday.

Production of cobalt rose to 2 137 t from 2 128 t in 2010, the statistics office said.

Brazil Potash eyes Q4 $300m-$500m Bovespa IPO, CEO says

Brazil Potash, hot on the heels of raising $58.6-million in equity this week, aims to sell another $300-million to $500-million worth of share in a Brazilian initial public offering either in the last quarter of 2012 or the first three months of 2013, CEO David Argyle said in an interview on Thursday.

The company, backed by Toronto’s Forbes & Manhattan, owns potash in the South American state’s Amazonas basin, where it hopes to build a $3.5-billion to $4-billion mine, he said.
