Global steel consumption growth to slow in 2012

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is forecasting global steel consumption growth to slow to 3.6% in 2012, from 5.6% in 2011, as China enters a less steel-intensive growth phase and eurozone debt crisis uncertainties continue to persist.

Steel consumption is expected to reach 1.42-billion tons this year, the association said. It is forecasting steel demand growth of 4.5% to 1.49-billion tons for 2013.

China to deliver copper to LME-Jiangxi Copper unit

Large Chinese copper smelters and trading firms have agreed to deliver refined copper cathodes to the London Metal Exchange in the next two months in an effort to boost the availability of copper in the global market, Jiangxi Copper International Trading Co Ltd said.

In a statement received by Reuters late Sunday, Jiangxi Copper International, a subsidiary of China’s top producer Jiangxi Copper Company Ltd , said the smelters included members of China Smelters Purchase Team and Xiangguang Copper Co Ltd.

Mongolia mine law change unlikely to be retroactive

Changes to Mongolia’s investment rules that will allow it to review takeover bids by foreign investors are part of efforts to avoid over-dependence on commodity-hungry China and are not aimed at reviewing existing deals, a government Minister said.

Chinese firm to invest $100m in Uganda copper mine

China’s Gingko Energy Company plans to invest $100-million over a five-year period to revive production at Kilembe copper mine in western Uganda, the African country’s president’s office said.

Gingko’s chairman, Lin Rui Hui, told President Yoweri Museveni of the investment plans on Friday.
