More iron-ore supply than demand, soft market probable in short-term – Kumba

Iron-ore prices will probably soften further in the short-term, says Kumba Iron Ore CEO Chris Griffith, who adds that the company is currently experiencing market softness.

Griffith tells Mining Weekly Online in a video interview that there is currently more iron-ore supply than demand.

Africa could do more to cash in on commodities boom

Africa has so far failed to benefit much from the commodity price boom, but opportunities were still there, a report compiled on behalf of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) stated.

The commodities boom offered the chance to increase tax revenue at the very least, the ‘Minerals and Africa’s Development’ report stated, and said that governments of African mineral countries had the opportunity to negotiate more favourable licencing and tax regimes.

$280m Letšeng expansion receives board approval

The board of Gem Diamonds has approved a $280-million expansion project to double the output of its Letšeng mine in Lesotho.

The expansion, dubbed Project Kholo, would start in January and would ramp up to full production by July 2014, the London-listed miner said on Wednesday.

Aquila applies for Kalahari manganese licence as DFS confirms viability

A definitive feasibility study (DFS) of the Gravenhage manganese project, in South Africa, has confirmed the technical and economic viability of a 1.5-million-ton-a-year operation, diversified junior Aquila Resources said on Wednesday.

The DFS proposes an opencut operation with subsequent underground mining, which would produce oxide manganese ore over 17 years. Product exports were expected to start in 2015.

Zambia says won’t re-introduce mine windfall tax

Zambia, Africa’s top copper producer, will not re-introduce a mine windfall tax it abolished in 2009 as such a measure could harm mining operations and negatively impact the economy, Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda said on Wednesday.

"It would be unwise for the government to introduce a windfall tax when metal prices are unstable and are usually trending downwards," Chikwanda said in a statement.

Pan African sends off first PGM concentrate

Precious metal miner Pan African Resources has produced its first platinum-group metals (PGMs) concentrate at its Phoenix chrome tailings retreatment plant (CTRP) in the North West province two months early.

The concentrate was sent to Western Platinum, an operating subsidiary of Lonmin, on Tuesday.
