New research from the WGC highlights the fundamental role of India in the global gold market

BHP puts coal prospecting rights up for sale in SA

BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa (BECSA) will divest some of its currently undeveloped coal prospecting rights to focus on its existing operations throughout South Africa.

BECSA on Monday reported that other industry members would be better positioned to develop these rights, potentially converting them into mining rights, in a more timely way.

Miners has ‘wait-and-see’ approach to climate change

The global mining sector is largely adopting a “wait-and-see” approach to climate change actions, with only a few companies implementing sustainability measures while others cite the lack of a business case to introduce any response, a KPMG survey has found.

But in South Africa, the situation was said to be quite different, as the local mining industry was viewed as more diverse and mature, with a growing awareness of the impacts of climate change in the local economy.

Seasonal rains hit output CoAL’s Woestalleen mines

Junior miner Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) reported on Monday that seasonal rainfall had an “adverse” impact on production at its Woestalleen opencast mines near Witbank, but output at the Mooiplaats Colliery increased slightly.

Run-of-mine (ROM) production at at the Woestalleen mines fell to 761 393 t of coal during the December quarter, compared with first quarter production of 930 840 t.

Shell to include public concerns over Karoo exploration in EMP

Energy giant Shell said on Monday that all concerns raised over the envisaged shale gas exploration activities in South Africa’s Karoo basin would be taken “very seriously” and would be integrated into the environmental management plan (EMP).

Shell communications vice-president Phaldie Kalam told Mining Weekly Online that two of the most common concerns that were raised after the first week of consultations included the security of the area’s underground water source and the protection of shallow fresh water aquifers.

Afrikaans weekly newspaper Rapport reported that community members, including South African business tycoon Johann Rupert, raised concerns around the processes that would be used in an area with extremely sparse water resources.

Unions declare dispute with Exxaro over retrenchements

Three trade unions declared a dispute on Monday with diversified resources group Exxaro over retrenchment plans, Solidarity said.

"The trade unions Solidarity, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Uasa declared another dispute with the coal company Exxaro today," Louis Pretorius, Solidarity spokesman for the mining industry, said in a statement.
