2009 Proof Platinum Eagle Coins

Once again the government has disappointed the masses with a promise and then a cancellation. The latest involves the 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle Coins and bullion coins. Just like the Gold Buffalo coin, this one was cancelled because of the lack of the needed precious metal.
Earlier in the month of October, the US mint did partially change their mind and have announced a limited and scaled down production of the proof platinum eagle coin for this year. Only the 1 ounce coin will be produced.
The unique thing about this US coin was that each year the reverse side changes in design. The design for this year is to have the theme of “To form a more perfect Union”. This design will have a small tree with 13 leaves on it that represent the thirteen original colonies if it has been decided or finalized yet. Yes again the government cannot make up their mind. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
On the US mints home page and throughout the site there is no mention of this discontinuation of the complete proof set or anything about the changes except for one press release on October 6, 2009. In that statement they claim the release date for the 2009 proof platinum eagle one ounce coin will be December 3, 2009. This statement also claims to have been working on obtaining enough blanks to fill next year’s orders. Too bad they forgot to do it this year.
The 2009 buffalo US gold coins now have a release date of October 29. I wonder if they will actually do it.
