The 2009 American Silver Eagles are currently suspended for purchase from the U.S. Mint. These are beautiful uncirculated coins made of 0.993 fine silver. This silver bullion coin weight in silver is backed by the U.S. Government and guaranteed for its silver content.

One little known fact about this coin is that there is actually a law that forces the U.S. Mint to not only produce this coin, but to meet the public need for the coin.  This is Public Law 99-61. The only limitation is the availability of silver bullion. This is the reason for the suspension of their minting this year. Not three weeks ago the 2008 American Silver Eagle sales were suspended do to the time limit set forth by the U.S. Mint.

The American Silver Eagle Coin was first minted in 1986 and has gained wide acceptance by the public. Each year since the U.S. Mint has produced a limited number to meet the demand until the silver bullion blanks ran out this year. Each coin is one troy ounce of 0.999 silver with a face value of $1. For coin collecting purposes, the American Silver Eagle Proofs are minted.

The American Silver Eagle is minted at three different mints in America. They are in Philadelphia, San Francisco and West Point.  The front design came from the walking half dollar that was minted from 1916 to 1947. The back side was is of the heraldic eagle which was first designed by John Mercanti.

Millions of these coins are produced for investment purposes every year in the uncirculated form. The proofs for coin collectors have also been minted but the number has been below a million each year except for the first year where 1,446,778 were minted. 1994 had the fewest proofs minted at 372,168.

The 2009 American Silver Eagles will be minted again as soon as a sufficient supply of silver bullion blanks has been achieved.
